West Coast Encaustic Artists are talking about WAX

West Coast Encaustic Artists is a newly formed group of artists that work in encaustic. Encaustic is a paint made from bees wax, dammar resin and pigments. It is used in a molten state, onto a variety of stable matrixes: wood, ceramic, metal. It comes to us from ancient Eqypt, where the Fayum portraits were discovered. It is a very versitile medium, can be reworked at any time by heating, yet is very permanant. The Eyption portraits are over 2500 years old.In 2001 Joanne Mattera published the book, "The Art of Encaustic Painting", which opened up the technical aspects of using encaustic. R&F Paints, and Evans Encaustics now manufacture encaustic paint that is available in ready to use blocks. Electrical palletes, griddles, frying pans, and heat plates allow for the medium to be melted and maintained at a constant temperature for working. The surface must be fused so that the layers become one, this is done with heat guns, propane torches, heat bulbs, etc.The members of West Coast Encaustic Artists, WCEA, repesent a wonderful variety of art, from figuritive to absract, on a variey of surfaces. The group participates in shows all over the country and sponsors workshops, retreats and provides information about encaustics.
